On Thursday, February 20th, President Donald Trump endorsed Representative Byron Donalds for governor of Florida in 2026, signaling strong support for the congressman’s anticipated bid to succeed Governor Ron DeSantis, who is term-limited.
“I know Byron well, have seen him tested at the highest, most difficult levels, and he is a TOTAL WINNER!” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “As Governor, Byron would have a BIG Voice and would work closely with me to advance our America First Agenda. Byron Donalds would be a truly Great and Powerful Governor for Florida and, should he decide to run, will have my Complete and Total Endorsement. RUN, BYRON, RUN!”
Donalds has not officially announced his candidacy but has reportedly informed Republican donors and political allies in Florida that he intends to enter the race. Recently, he has taken steps toward a campaign, including hiring Tony Fabrizio, a pollster who previously worked on Trump’s presidential campaigns.
The race is shaping up to be a high-profile contest among Florida Republicans. Casey DeSantis, the First Lady of Florida, is also considering a bid, and Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson has been mentioned as a potential contender. A recent internal poll showed Donalds leading with 31% support, while Lt. Governor Jeanette Nuñez and Simpson received 4% and 3%, respectively.
Trump’s endorsement could significantly impact the race, given his strong influence over Florida’s Republican electorate. The president won the state by double-digit margins in the last three presidential elections and remains a dominant force in its politics.
A longtime Trump ally, Donalds has been a vocal supporter of the president’s policies, backing Trump and closely aligning himself with his positions on immigration, the economy, and national security.
Responding to Trump’s endorsement, Donalds wrote on X, “President Trump is Making America Great Again. I’m committed to working with him to Keep Florida Great. Announcement coming soon!”
